Nelson Mandela: Revolutionary Figure, His Love of Batik & Madiba Shirt

An inspirational quote by Nelson Mandela about the value of Making a Difference:

“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”

Nelson Mandela (Former President of South Africa)

Nelson Mandela was a revolutionary figure from South Africa who had a great impact on world peace. He spent 27 years in prison fighting for human rights and equality regardless of skin color. Mandela first visited Indonesia when he was still the vice chairman of the African National Congress in 1990. On that occasion, Mandela was first introduced to the Indonesian Batik which was a souvenir from the President of Indonesia at that time, Mr. H.M Suharto.

"When he returned to Indonesia in 1997 as President of South Africa, Mandela wore the batik and over time Mandela often wore batik in various state events at national and international forums, including the United Nations. In honor of Nelson Mandela, the United Nations has officially designated July 18 as Mandela Day, which coincides with Nelson Mandela's birthday.

In celebration of Mandela Day this year, with the theme "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.", we from the Second Opportunity Hub and Second Chance Foundation, also honor Nelson Mandela with hand-painted Batik by the inmates who are struggling with their second chance for a better life. The batik created by the inmates also symbolizes Nelson Mandela's bond and love for Indonesia, while also continuing his passion for change for the people of Indonesia.
